Quarter Midge
101
Quarter
Midget race cars are essentially 1/4 scale Midget race cars. Unlike go
carts 1/4 Midgets feature four wheel independent suspension and full
roll cages. Full racing harness and other safety gear is mandatory. They
are powered by 120cc and 160cc 4 stroke Honda engine that are kept close
to stock, keeping down costs and making for a very reliable power plant.
These cars are designed to run on small oval tracks which can be setup
in parking lots or at more permanent facilities. Quarter Midget racing
got its start back in the 1930’s in the Los Angeles area and has now
spread to all 50 states and Canada.
Who
Quarter
Midget racing is a competitive sport for children ages 6 - 16: however,
most often the whole family is involved, with mom and or dad filling
positions of crew chief, mechanic or scoring duties. Making this a true
family sport.
What do you need?
To get
started a good used 1/4 Midget can be found for as little as $1500 to
about $3000 and most will come with spare parts. A new 1/4 Midget will
cost in the range of $5000 to $6000 or about the same as a new
snowmobile. Other items needed are basic safety gear Helmet with a SA or
M2000 rating, eye protection, neck collar, gloves and Karting suit.
These items are all available from many good vendors online or can often
be found used on the internet for about 1/2 of new cost since kids tend
to grow faster then we often like.
